WORKSHOP: The Beaverton Satire Writing
Time: 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Want a career writing jokes about our screwed up world? In this 6-week class we'll cover all forms of professional satire writing. That includes satirical news in the style of the Onion & The Beaverton, short form essays a la McSweeneys & Shouts and Murmurs, late night monologues and satirical sketch comedy. We'll discuss how to use these formats to amplify your voice and point of view, as well as how to navigate the industry side of it all. Students will actively participate in each element of satire writing, and receive feedback from their acclaimed instructors who are currently writing about themselves in the third person.
About The Instructors
This class will be taught by the creative team behind award winning satirical website and television show The Beaverton. Since it was founded in 2011 by a bunch of comedians and bored university students, the Beaverton has grown by leaps and bounds to become a fake news empire unlike any other. Its satirical headlines have been misinforming Canadians from coast to coast, using parody to shine a light on our absurd, wonderful country. This popularity lead to the creation of its television show, which will soon air its third season and has been hailed as "finally, Canadian satire with teeth" (National Post), "a Canadian answer to the Daily Show whose coverage of Trump's election was miles above what the American shows served up" (Complex Magazine) and "lame CBC garbage" (man on twitter who is unaware the show is on CTV).
