ROAST

Roast Battle Canada’s Olivia Stadler & Tia Percy talked one day about how anytime a woman participates in a roast battle show, she is usually either the only, or one of the only women participating and thus the jokes about her become about how she is simply Woman, as if that is her only defining feature, and it becomes easy for her opponent to lean on lazy, boring stereotypes for punchlines.

And so they incepted CAT FIGHT: a roast show featuring only women where lazy and sexist jokes will be replaced by more creative & deeper cuts.

It’s rare for women to be pitted against each other in a roast battle because there’s a perceived cattiness that creates discomfort in an audience (hence the tongue-in-cheek title of our show). People aren’t comfortable seeing women do anything but build each other up. An audience sees two women being mean to each other and thinks of it plainly as anti-feminist.

We argue that there’s something subconsciously sexist in that reading of the situation, because it implies that women can’t handle it; it implies that we aren’t cool like the guys, that we can’t razz each other. Roasting is the highest form of flattery because you’re trusting your counterpart to be evolved enough to know themselves, be comfortable in who they are, and to be able to take it.

Our goal is to create a context where women - who (in our opinion) tend to be better on the whole at roasting than men - can do just that without the audience clamming up and feeling uncomfortable; to create a show where brilliant writing need not be wasted on groans and sounds of disapproval; to create a fun-filled night where it’s safe and even celebrated to be bitches!

This night will also be professionally taped for public consumption after the fact - so don’t miss your chance to be part of something that will live on forever!

We have nothing but the best of the best signed on to the show:

On the judging dais with Tia and Olivia is one of Canada’s top headliners, Martha Chaves (JFL Galas, part One of the Ten Most influential Hispanic Canadians (Award 2023) Canadian Comedy Award Winner 2018 (Best comedy) and 2019 (Because News)

Competing in the show we have:

-Laura Leibow (Just for Laughs, Roast Battle Canada,  CBC’s Laugh Out Loud, Ice Breakers Comedy Festival)
