New Normal Comedy presents “Hotter than Amma’s Curry” featuring spicy Tamil comedians, Thurka & Shivani. Since 2018, New Normal Comedy has celebrated diverse artists in stand-up, drag kings and queens, improv and musical comedy. 

Thurka Gunaratnam is Toronto based stand-up comedian, actor, writer, digital creator and filmmaker. Thurka created New Normal Comedy in 2018 to build solidarity amongst marginalized artists. Refinery29 recognized Thurka and New Normal Comedy alongside notable Canadian comedians like Lilly Singh and Catherine O’hara. Thurka was featured in NOW Toronto for Comedians who PUNCH UP. In 2019, CBC Comedy featured Thurka’s tour, Born in the City, Made for the Mountains because stories about camping alone is “normal”. Often praised for their stage presence and astute observations, Thurka merges story-telling through poignant honesty and hilarity.

Based in Greenville, SC, and born and raised in Canada, Shivani Nadarajah is a HR Business Leader, storytelling stand-up comedian, improvisor, and motivational speaker. She has performed stand up throughout North and South Carolina opening for famous touring comedians like Russell Peters, Gary Gulman and Nicole Byer. She loves her culture, upbringing and work experiences and shares this with passion to her audience in a creative comedic way. She loves sharing the art of strategic storytelling by weaving tales of being a child of immigrant parents, growing up in the south and being often the only woman in the room. Shivani recently released her first comedy special with Dry Bar Comedy and has amassed over 2.2 million views and has the highest engagement of all Comedians highlighted on social media. 

Combined together these two comedians bring melanin love, homage to their roots from Sri Lanka, love for Amma’s and hilarious story-telling. Not only do they love womxn but they are convinced they’re hotter than their Amma’s curries ;)
